2 ‘muggers’ bullet-hit in Satkhira ‘shootout’

Two suspected muggers received bullet wounds in a ‘shootout’ with police at Dattadanga in Sadar upazila early Wednesday. They were identified as Rubel Hossain,32, son of Giasuddin, a resident of Dargapara village of the upazila, and Rubel Sheikh,27, son of Jagar Ali Sheikh, a resident of Rasulpur area of Satkhira district.
Two police constables-Alim and Emdad-were also injured in the incident.
Being tipped off that a gang of muggers were taking preparation to commit mugging at Dattadanga intersection, a team of police launched a drive in the area at about 5:00 am, said Liton, sub-inspector of Sadar Police Station.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the gang members started firing shots at police who also retaliated with firing triggering a gunfight, leaving the two suspected muggers bullet-hit and the two constables injured.
Police arrested the injured muggers while their associates managed to flee the scene. The muggers were admitted to Satkhira Sadar Hospital under police custody. Rubel Hossain was wanted by police in several cases for mugging, police sources said.
