Forthcoming Upazila elections: AL kicks-off organisational campaign

The central leaders of ruling Awami League started countrywide organisational tour from Thursday [yesterday].
Party sources said the AL wants to gear-up the grass-roots level to ensure single party candidate at each upazila for the elections to upazila parishads to be held in phases from February 19.
Seven teams of AL, each headed by a presidium member, have been leading the tour to different districts and upazilas with a view to ensuring victory of party candidates in the upcoming upazila elections.
In addition, seven organising secretaries of AL have been entrusted with responsibilities as coordinators of the teams in their respective divisions to make the tour programme a success, the sources added.
The AL teams will also encourage the grass-roots leaders to complete the councils of the party’s district and upazila units as soon as possible.
AL office secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap said: “The main purpose of the organisational tour is to let the people of the country know about the present government’s pragmatic future programmes to transform Bangladesh into a middle- income developed country translating into reality its vision-2021.”
“During the tours, the party’s central leaders will highlight the successes of the previous AL-led grand alliance government in its five year tenure,” he said, adding “The AL teams would also try to remove confusion in the public mind providing with real data and information relating to the acts of destruction, terrorism and killing people by setting them on fire by BNP-Jamaat combine in the name of movement over past few months.”
He said: “The AL teams will also instruct leaders and workers of grassroots level units to resolve the difference of opinion and misunderstanding in all level remaining united to build resistance against the evil- activities of BNP-Jamaat combine.”
AL organising secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim said: “The main goal of the tour is to strengthen the organisational activities at the grass roots level across the country. The teams will hold workers meetings and ask the grass roots level leaders to take steps for holding council sessions for expired district and upazila units.”
Several senior AL leaders said the ruling party is now considering the upazila elections as the way to revive the organisation and achieve people’s confidence after the January 5 general elections, boycotted by all opposition parties including the BNP-led alliance. They said the party high-ups also do not want to see the recurrence of results of the city corporation polls, defeat of the party, in the upazila elections.
Meanwhile, AL general secretary and LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam has also urged party leaders-workers-admirers and people from all walks of life to make the organisational tour programme a success.
