UNB, Cox’s Bazar :
At least five people, including four members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), were injured in a gunfight between BGB men and Yaba smugglers at Moulvipara in Teknaf upazila on Friday night.
The injured BGB men were identified as Khorshed Alam, Nurul Islam, Mohamamd Abdul Majid and Mintu Das.
Acting on secret information that a consignment of Yaba tablets was coming from Myanmar through the Naf River, a team of BGB 42-battalion, led by its commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Abujar Al Jahid went to the area at about 10:00 pm.
When a boat with smugglers anchored in the area, the BGB men challenged them.
Sensing danger, the smugglers opened fire on the border guards prompting the BGB men to fire back, triggering a gunfight.
A chase and counter-chase took place during the incident. Four BGB men and a smuggler were injured during the gun battle. BGB also arrested Mohamamd Ismail, 42, an alleged smuggler, from the spot. The injured were rushed to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex. The border force recovered 50,000 pieces of Yaba tablets and a sharp weapon from the scene.
