Indices move up, turnover nearly 2-month high

Equity indices at the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) edged up on Sunday, with the daily turnover reaching a two-month high, as most investors took their positions on sector-specific stocks.

DSEX, the broad-based index of the DSE, increased 0.15% to 6,311. Shariah index DSES and blue-chip DS30 moved up 0.16% and 0.29% respectively.

Overall participation of investors also increased as the daily turnover surged by 24.5% to Tk867.7 crore on Sunday, compared to the previous trading session.

The market opened on a positive note as investors were active on both sides of the trading fence, while buyers were slightly on the dominant side throughout the session, wrote EBL Securities in its daily market commentary.

“Investors’ optimism remained concentrated on the hyped-up insurance stocks that continued to dominate the turnover board,” the review added.

Out of all the scrips on the DSE main trading platform on Sunday, 63 advanced, 94 declined, and 169 stayed the same as they were in the previous trading session.

On the sectoral front, general insurance was the highest contributor to the day’s turnover, adding 46.6%, where life insurance contributed the second-highest 9.1%.

Life insurance sector posted the highest price appreciation of 1.8%, followed by services, and travel stocks. On the other hand, jute faced the highest price correction of 1.6%.

Republic Insurance was the top gainer of price on Sunday, as the stock gained the highest 9.98% compared to the previous trading session. Continental Insurance, on the other hand, was the top loser, shedding 5.58% price.
