THE police arrested 25 candidates and Chhatra League activists in Lalmonirhat in connection with the leak of question papers of the recruitment test for government primary school assistant teachers held on Friday, a news report in a local daily said. The recruitment test, originally scheduled for November 8, 2013, was then cancelled as the question paper was leaked in 17 districts. Activists of the ruling Awami League-backed student wing, meanwhile, laid siege to the Sadar Police Station till 9:00 pm demanding release of all arrested in this connection. The Deputy Commissioner, Habibur Rahman, said that the police were investigating the matter and action would be taken against the people responsible for the question leak, as per the report. It is interesting to note how question papers for the recruitment of government school teachers could be leaked by members of the Chhatra League. It would indicate a very high level of collusion between the examining body administrators and the student body. Why this association exists and why it would lead to a leakage of the examination papers needs to be closely examined. The facts which can be ascertained thus point out to the fact that such things are occurring for profit so that people who would not otherwise be fit to be teachers are paying money to get question papers for exams which they would not otherwise have passed except by cheating in the first place. This would in itself set up a very bad precedent. Teachers who get jobs for political consideration for political collusion cannot be expected to be acceptable as moral precedents. Their teaching quality and methodology is likely to be substandard and therefore they would be unable to properly educate the students who are the future leaders of tomorrow. Thus our entire future as a nation would be in jeopardy – just over some people who want to make quick money for themselves. When dishonest politics prevails everywhere we do not know where to turn to for saving our children’s education from dishonest practices. No government functionaries can say that they are free to do what is good for the people freely. It is no use seeking help from the political government when politics is about corruption. We appeal to teachers, please do not forget the high responsibility of educating our children you have undertaken. If not anything, do not destroy their character and respect for truth and knowledge.
