A lighter ship named “MV Prince of Ghashiakhali-1” laden with some 800 metric tons coals sank in the river Pashur of Mongla Sea Port near at Kanainagar on Friday noon when it was caught by the cyclone ‘Midhily’ that swept over Mongla and its adjacent Upazilas in Bagerhat district, according to a delayed report received here. It is learnt from an authentic source that when the lighter ship was caught by the cyclonic storm and it was tried to take shelter at a safer place. But at one stage the ship stranded with a shoal and as a result, a big crack appeared on its bottom and consequently, it sank in the river Pashur channel near at Kanainagar. Fortunately, all the 12 sailors of the lighter ship were able to swim to the shore of channel. The lighter ship after loading 8 hundred metric tons coals from a foreign commercial ship that was staying at the Harbour area of Mongla port was going to Noapara River Port in Jashore district. But on the way to Noapara it was caught by the storm and it tried to take shelter at a safer place the mishap was happened.
