The main opposition party-BNP on Tuesday said the Awami League government would not be allowed to hold another stage-managed general election anymore.
“People do not want to see the oppressor Awami League in power anymore. This time people will resist them.
They must not be allowed to hold stage-managed polls anymore,” BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas said while addressing a public rally held in front of Jinjira BNP office in Keraniganj.
“You (govt) still have time to dissolve parliament, resign after forming a caretaker government.
We want fair and participatory polls,” he said.
The rally is the first one of the party’s 15-day progamme it announced on Monday as part of their ongoing one point-movement demanding resignation of the government and holding the general election under a neutral government.
“AL is afraid of quitting power as they did huge misdeeds, I can assure you (AL) that we won’t harm you. We will not do anything (if you quit power),” Mirza Abbas said.
Urging the party men to get ready, Mirza Abbas said “It is not the time to sit idle at home.
People will give a befitting reply to Awami League through exercising their franchise in the next polls.”
The BNP senior leader said, “The people of the country are struggling amid price hike of essentials and oppression but in the next general election people will give a befitting reply to the illegal government through vote.”
Meanwhile, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakharul Islam Alamgir, in a separate programme, has said the party’s Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is seriously ill.
“Our leader Begum Khaleda Zia is seriously ill.
Her physical condition is serious.
Tarique Rahman continues to struggle and organise even from exile.
Other political leaders have also come forward now. So there is no time to sit idle at home,” Mirza Fakhrul said.
The BNP Secretary General was addressing the the golden jubilee ceremony of a fraction of Dhaka Journalist Union (DUJ) at the Jatiya Press Club on Tuesday afternoon.
DUJ President Md Shohidul Islam and General Secretary Khurshid Alam, BNP Vice-Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu, and other leaders and activists were present on the occasion.
In a separate event, the BNP Secretary General said that the government has smashed everything of the country with its misrule.
“This AL government has destroyed everything of the country with its past several years misrule.
If we want to save the country from this anti-people government we have to prevent them from taking power with vote rigging anymore,” Mirza Fakhrul said while addressing Hindu leaders on the occasion of ‘Janmastami’ at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office in the capital.
